'Blue Steel' is a Russian sage with strong blue flower panicles above silvery grey foliage. From July to September it forms a bright blue haze. The foliage has a spicy scent. It loves sun and dry conditions and is a valuable source of food for bees.

About this variety

Russian sage is a sub-shrub from the steppes of Central Asia and is perfect for hot, dry corners of the garden. 'Blue Steel' bears long, branched panicles of small lipped flowers in a cool blue. The stems are whitish and the leaves finely cut and silvery grey. This makes the whole plant look light and translucent.

Plant 'Blue Steel' in a spot in full sun with well-drained, preferably limy soil. At about 140–160 cm tall, it belongs at the back of the border or as a loose group in gravel and prairie plantings. Ornamental grasses, sedum, echinacea and globe thistles are good partners. Together with yellow perennials it creates a strong contrast.

Bees and butterflies visit the flowers throughout late summer. The panicles can be used in bouquets, fresh or dried. In winter the silvery stems remain standing as structure. Once established, the plant needs hardly any water and returns reliably every year. Planted in small groups, it forms a moving blue band that shimmers almost metallically in the evening light. Beside a path, the foliage releases its spicy scent as you brush past.

Planting

Plant 'Blue Steel' in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October. Dig a planting hole twice the size of the root ball and set the root collar just below the surface. Space the plants 50–70 cm apart. A spot in full sun and well-drained soil are important. Then water them in.

Care

Water only while the plant is establishing. Feeding is hardly necessary. In spring, when buds appear, cut back to about 30 cm, but not further into the old wood. Until then the old stems can stay standing as winter decoration. Avoid waterlogging.
