  • Bright pink to magenta flower heads
  • Flowers from August to October
  • Compact, about 35–45 cm tall
  • Reddish stems, grey-green foliage
  • Seed heads decorative into winter

Sedum 'Carl' is a compact, upright stonecrop with large, bright pink flower heads. It flowers from August to October on reddish stems and stays more compact than the well-known 'Herbstfreude'. Robust, drought-tolerant and a feast for insects in autumn.

About this variety

'Carl' shows a stronger pink than many other tall sedums. The flat flower heads sit on reddish stems above fleshy, grey-green foliage that develops pink edges in late autumn. As they fade, the flowers turn a deeper pink and later a coppery rust red.

At about 35–45 cm tall, the variety suits border edges, rock gardens and gravel or prairie beds. It loves full sun and free-draining, sandy or loamy soil that is on the dry side. Grasses, asters, sage and coneflowers are ideal neighbours. In a pot it even tolerates the occasional forgotten watering.

Bees, bumblebees and butterflies visit the flower heads in large numbers in autumn. The stems last a long time in bouquets. Leave the seed heads standing over winter, as they are particularly lovely with hoar frost or snow. The sedum is also a rewarding plant for beginners, as it forgives many mistakes. Even in hot, dry summers it stays healthy and compact, as long as the soil is free-draining and no water stands.

Planting

Plant in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October. Choose a spot in full sun with very free-draining soil, as sedums do not tolerate waterlogging. The planting hole should be twice the size of the root ball, with the crown just below the soil. Keep 30–40 cm between plants and water in.

Care

Water only during long dry spells, as sedums store water in their leaves. Feeding is hardly necessary; too many nutrients make the stems soft. Leave faded flowers standing until late winter and then cut back to the ground. Divide every few years in spring.
