  • Long flowering from May to July
  • Pollinator-friendly

'Imperial Velvet' is a Siberian iris with velvety blue flowers. At about 50–70 cm it stays fairly compact and flowers from May to July. Robust, hardy and popular with bees, it is suitable for groups in borders, by ponds and in natural-style gardens.

About this variety

The name promises velvet, and the flowers keep that promise. 'Imperial Velvet' shows a deep, rich blue that shimmers softly in the light. The flowers of the Siberian iris are finely built and stand several to a stem on slender stalks. As they open one after another, flowering lasts from May into July.

At about 50 to 70 cm, this variety stays more compact than many other Siberian irises, so it also suits smaller gardens and the front of the border. Yellow globeflowers, white astilbes or lady's mantle make lovely contrasts. By a pond or in a damp hollow it looks natural, in sun or partial shade.

With 25 pieces you can plant a large area that flowers as a closed stand after a few years. Bees and bumblebees like to visit the flowers. For the vase, cut stems in bud. After flowering, the grassy foliage remains as calm green structure.

Planting

Plant the rootstocks in spring or autumn, about 3–5 cm deep and 25–35 cm apart. A sunny to partly shaded spot with moist, loamy or sandy soil is ideal. Water in thoroughly after planting.

Care

Keep the soil evenly moist, especially in the first year. A little compost in spring is enough fertiliser. Cut off faded stems and cut back the foliage in late autumn or spring. Divide the clumps after a few years. The variety is hardy in Switzerland.
