  • Mix in blue, pink and white
  • Bells all around the stem
  • About 30–40 cm tall
  • Flowers in April and May
  • Naturalises beneath trees and shrubs

This mix of Spanish bluebells brings together blue, pink and white flowers. The bells hang all around upright stems and form colourful carpets over the years. Ideal for partially shaded spots beneath shrubs, where colour is welcome in late spring.

About this variety

Spanish bluebells come in several colours, and this mix brings them together. Alongside the classic blue there are soft pink and pure white. Each plant forms an upright stem with many hanging bells above sturdy, strap-shaped foliage.

At about 30–40 cm tall, they suit informal borders, woodland edges and the ground beneath deciduous shrubs. Combine them with late tulips, ferns, epimediums or hostas. In pots they look good for a season, but they unfold their full beauty in the garden. Scattered loosely, they create a picture like a colourful spring woodland.

Bees and bumblebees love to visit the bells. Single stems can be cut for small bouquets. The bulbs multiply well and naturalise over the years. Seedlings often revert to the blue of the wild form, so the colour picture slowly changes. That is exactly what makes such a planting lively: it looks a little different every spring. No part of the plant is edible.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November. Set them tip upwards, 8–10 cm deep and 8–10 cm apart, in loose groups. A sunny to partially shaded spot with moist, free-draining soil is ideal.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. If you want to keep the colour mix, cut off faded flowers before seed forms. In a lawn, only mow once the foliage has died back. After a few years you can divide dense clumps.
