  • Colourful mix of orange, red, violet, white, yellow
  • Star flowers often with dark markings and a yellow centre
  • Flowers in June and July
  • About 25–35 cm tall
  • 50 bulbs for colourful groups

The harlequin flower is a cheerful summer bulb from South Africa. This mix brings star-shaped flowers in orange, red, violet, white and yellow, often with dark markings and a yellow centre. Fifty bulbs make colourful groups for sunny beds, pots and window boxes.

About this variety

Sparaxis tricolor and its hybrids carry flat, star-shaped flowers with six petals. In the centre there is often a bright yellow eye framed by a dark ring. This makes the flowers look like little harlequins in colourful costumes. The narrow, sword-shaped leaves stay in the background. Each bulb produces several stems, each with several flowers. No two plantings look alike, which makes the mix so lively.

At about 25–35 cm tall, they suit the front of sunny beds, edges, rock gardens and pots. Fifty bulbs are enough for several colourful groups. Good partners are Ixia, grasses, lavender and low summer flowers. In a window box they make a cheerful mix of colours. The flowers open wide in the sun and close in the evening.

In the vase the stems last a few days and look pretty in small posies. Scent and pollinators are of secondary importance. What matters is sun and free-draining soil. Overwintered dry and frost-free, the bulbs can be used for many years. In a bowl on the garden table they are a cheerful eye-catcher.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in pots indoors from March, or directly outside after the Ice Saints (mid-May). They go about 5–8 cm deep, 8–10 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot with loose, sandy soil. They look best planted in groups.

Care

Water moderately, as the bulbs do not tolerate waterlogging. After flowering, let the foliage die back and keep the soil drier. In autumn, before the frost, lift them and store the bulbs dry and frost-free. In pots they can overwinter dry in the compost.
