  • Bright red, pointed star-shaped flowers
  • Black heart with a yellowish edge
  • Small at 15–25 cm, narrow blue-green foliage
  • Flowers from April to May
  • Very long-lived and naturalising

'Lizzy' is a form of Tulipa orphanidea and looks like a miniature lily-flowered tulip. Its red buds resemble little goblets, and in the sun they open into stars with a black heart. This species tulip returns every year and naturalises readily.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Lizzy' have pointed, slightly outward-curving petals in strong red. In bud they look like small red chalices; when the sun shines they open flat and show a black blotch at the base, finely edged in yellow. The narrow, blue-green foliage underlines its wild character.

At 15–25 cm tall, the variety belongs in sunny, well-drained places: the rock garden, gravel beds, the edges of borders or pots. In groups of 10 or more the red looks like little flames. Lovely partners are blue grape hyacinths, yellow species tulips or the silvery foliage of cushion plants. It also tolerates light partial shade but flowers best in full sun.

It is too small for the vase, but bees like to visit the open flower. Its strength is its staying power: with plenty of sun and good drainage 'Lizzy' returns for years and slowly spreads. Where it is happy, it occasionally self-seeds too. Leave the foliage after flowering.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, ideally in October or November when the soil is cool. Set the small bulbs about 8–10 cm deep, tip upwards, 5–8 cm apart. Groups of 10 or more look best. Plenty of sun and very free-draining soil are important; improve heavy soil with plenty of sand or grit. In pots the bulbs can sit close together.

Care

Water only during prolonged dry spells in spring. Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. The bulbs stay undisturbed in the ground and multiply. A planting basket protects against voles. Protect pots from constant wet in winter.
