'Fusilier' is a multi-flowered species tulip: three to six bright scarlet flowers open on each stem, like a small bouquet. At 25–35 cm it stays low, flowers early in the year and returns year after year in a sunny spot.

About this variety

One stem, several flowers: that is what makes Tulipa praestans 'Fusilier' special. Each bulb produces three to six flowers in a bright scarlet. Beneath them sits broad, blue-green foliage against which the red glows even more strongly. The flowers open in the sun and close in the evening.

At 25–35 cm tall, 'Fusilier' belongs at the front of the bed, in the rock garden or in natural-style plantings. White spring snowflakes, squills and grape hyacinths are fitting neighbours. In pots and bowls it looks good even in small numbers. In a bulb lasagne it works as an early top layer. In window boxes, compost with good drainage is enough for the bulbs to come safely through winter.

Cut short, it also looks lovely in a small vase. As a species tulip it is long-lived: in a sunny, free-draining spot it returns every year and gradually forms larger clumps. Early-flowering crocuses or grape hyacinths nearby are a good addition for pollinators, so nature finds something in the bed too.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December. In Switzerland October to November is ideal; you can continue until December as long as the ground is not frozen. Planting depth 10–15 cm, tip upwards, spacing 10–12 cm. The spot should be sunny and the soil well drained; in heavy soil sprinkle some sand into the planting hole. In pots and window boxes the bulbs can sit close together.

Care

Water a little during dry weeks in spring; otherwise the plant needs hardly any care. Snip off the seed heads and let the foliage yellow so the bulb can build up strength. There is no need to lift it, as the plants stay in place for many years. In areas with voles a planting basket is recommended. Protect large containers from prolonged rain in winter.
