Veronica longifolia 'Antarctica' is a long-leaved speedwell with slender, pure white flower spikes. From June to September they stand upright above the foliage and bring light and structure to the border. Bees and butterflies love the flowers, and the spikes last a long time in the vase.

About this variety

Long-leaved speedwell is a native perennial of damp meadows. 'Antarctica' bears spikes densely set with small white flowers that open from the bottom upwards. The spikes are slender and pointed, with several on each shoot. The lance-shaped, toothed foliage is fresh green.

At about 80–100 cm tall it belongs in the middle of sunny to partly shaded borders. A moist, loamy or sandy soil is ideal. White brings calm among strong colours: combine it with blue delphiniums, pink phlox, daylilies or grasses. In white gardens it is a reliable vertical form.

Bees, bumblebees and butterflies visit the flowers all summer. In the vase the spikes are an elegant addition. The perennial is hardy and long-lived. Cutting back faded spikes encourages repeat flowering. If you have room, plant several together. This creates a loose, bright colony that recalls a flowering meadow in summer and brings light to the green of woodland edges too.

Planting

Plant in spring from March to May or in autumn in September and October in a sunny to partly shaded spot. Dig a planting hole twice the size of the root ball and set the root collar just below the surface. Space plants 30–40 cm apart and water in.

Care

Water during dry spells; the soil should stay moist. Compost in spring is enough. Cut off faded spikes to encourage more flowers. Divide the clump every few years in spring.
