  • Divided, ruffled cup in several layers
  • Pale yellow to cream tones, outer petals greenish white
  • Flowers in April
  • Height about 35–45 cm
  • Unusual cut flower for spring bouquets

'Sunnyside Up' is a split-corona daffodil: the cup is divided right down to the base and lies flat on the petals in ruffled layers. The result is a flower that looks almost like a butterfly. Its soft shades of yellow and cream make it a real eye-catcher in April.

About this variety

Anyone seeing 'Sunnyside Up' for the first time looks twice. The cup is not trumpet-shaped but split open, spreading in wavy layers over the outer petals. The colours are soft: greenish-white petals and a cup in cream to lemon yellow. The flowers reach 8 to 10 cm across and look almost double.

At about 35–45 cm tall, it suits the front and middle of beds and borders. It looks particularly good with blue hyacinths or grape hyacinths, which make the pale yellow glow. In pots and bowls, the unusual flower shape can be admired up close. In meadows, it naturalises over time.

In the vase, the ruffled flowers are a talking point and mix well with tulips and branches. The bulbs multiply in the garden and form larger groups over the years. Voles and deer generally leave daffodils alone. The variety is of little value to bees.

Planting

The best planting time is September to November. Set the bulbs tip upwards 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. Choose a sunny or partly shaded spot with well-drained soil. In heavy soil, a little sand in the planting hole helps.

Care

After flowering, snip off the faded flowers but leave the foliage until it turns yellow. It feeds the bulb for the next season. In a lawn, wait to mow until the leaves have died back. Divide dense clumps after a few years. In the vase, daffodils release a slimy sap that harms other flowers, so stand the stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
