'Blue Arrow' is an unusually tall squill: its spikes grow about 70–90 cm tall and carry a hundred or more small violet-blue star-shaped flowers. They open from the bottom upwards and fill the gap between spring and summer with a cool blue.

About this variety

Scilla hyacinthoides is related to the familiar squills but grows much taller. In 'Blue Arrow', sturdy stems carry pyramid-shaped flower heads of numerous small star-shaped flowers in a pale violet-blue. They open in turn from the bottom upwards, so each spike flowers for weeks.

At about 70–90 cm, 'Blue Arrow' belongs in sunny perennial borders, among late tulips, alliums and young perennials such as sage, catmint or hardy geraniums. Plant the bulbs in groups of five to ten so that the blue spikes stand out well. It looks just as lovely in naturalistic gardens and meadow plantings as in large pots.

The many small flowers are popular with bees and bumblebees. In early summer it fills the time when most bulbs have finished flowering. In a warm, free-draining spot it returns every year. The spikes also look good when cut, for instance in tall bouquets with alliums and grasses.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, pointed end up, 10–15 cm deep and 20 cm apart. Choose a sunny, warm spot with well-drained soil. In heavy soils, mix sand or gravel into the planting hole. Set the bulbs in groups of five to ten.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. You can cut off faded spikes. In summer the bulb needs hardly any water, and waterlogging harms it. In exposed areas a layer of leaves protects it in winter.
