  • Everbearing from summer to autumn
  • Sweet, aromatic, medium-sized fruits
  • White flowers from April
  • Plants about 20–30 cm tall
  • For beds, raised beds, hanging baskets and window boxes

'Ostara' is an everbearing strawberry that gives you fresh fruit for months. The medium-sized red berries are sweet and aromatic. With ten plants, a small bed or a few window boxes are enough to harvest regularly from summer to autumn.

About this variety

Unlike single-cropping varieties, 'Ostara' forms new flowers and fruit all summer long. The berries are bright red, medium-sized and have a sweet, rounded flavour. So while there is no single big harvest, there is a bowlful of fresh strawberries almost every week.

At about 20–30 cm tall, it is ideal for raised beds, pots, window boxes and hanging baskets, but also for the classic garden bed. Choose a sunny spot with loose, humus-rich soil. It is happy among herbs such as thyme, basil or chives, and also works well as an edging along a vegetable bed.

The constant new flowers are a source of food for bees and bumblebees for months. To keep the plants vigorous, renew the bed after two to three years with young plants from your own runners, so the harvest stays generous year after year. If you grow several plants in a trough, the fruit is conveniently within reach and protected from slugs. A good reason to plant them close to the house.

Planting

Plant from March to May or in September and October. Set the plants so that the crown stays free. Space them 30–40 cm apart and mix a little compost into the soil. Water in well and keep moist for the first few weeks.

Care

Water evenly; in pots, daily on hot days. As the variety crops for a long time, it needs a dose of berry fertiliser in both spring and summer. Straw under the fruit prevents rot. Cut off any runners you do not need for propagation.
