  • Strong pink, star-shaped flowers
  • Striking red centre
  • Long flowering from July to October
  • Emerald-green, healthy foliage
  • Good resistance to powdery mildew

'Cosmopolitan' bears bright pink, star-shaped flowers with a striking red centre. Against the emerald-green foliage the panicles look fresh and modern. The variety flowers from July to October and is considered resistant to powdery mildew.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Cosmopolitan' have a special shape: instead of round corollas they show narrower, star-like spreading petals. Their strong pink is emphasised by a red centre. Together with the glossy, emerald-green foliage this creates a clear, fresh picture that suits modern gardens just as well as classic borders.

In the border 'Cosmopolitan' sets a lively accent of colour. Silvery foliage, white phlox, blue globe thistles or dark red sedum go well with it. It grows in sun and partial shade in moist, fertile soil. For a strong effect, plant at least three together. The star-shaped individual flowers give the panicles a lighter, airier structure than many classic varieties. This makes the plant look modern and at home even among fine grasses and prairie perennials.

Butterflies and bees find nectar in the flowers. For the vase, choose panicles whose first flowers are open. Because the variety flowers into October, it provides colour for garden and bouquet over a long period and stays in place for many years.

Planting

Plant the phlox in spring (March to May) or in autumn (September to October). Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and set the plant so that the shoot buds sit just below the soil. Keep a spacing of 40–50 cm so that air can circulate between the plants. Water in thoroughly.

Care

During dry periods, water thoroughly at the base and not over the leaves. Despite its good resistance, an airy position helps against powdery mildew. Work in compost in spring. Cut off faded panicles so that new buds form. Cut back to ground level in late autumn and divide every few years.
