'Europa' is a romantic phlox with pale pink to almost white flowers, each with a bright magenta eye. The lush panicles smell delicious and appear over a long period, from June to October depending on the climate. A reliable, medium-height perennial.

About this variety

'Europa' is one of the older, proven varieties of tall phlox. The flowers are pale pink, sometimes almost white, with a strong magenta eye at the centre. This marking brings the large panicles to life without being loud. The scent is sweet and carries a long way on warm evenings.

At about 60–80 cm tall, 'Europa' is of medium height and suits the front and middle of the border. The bushy, leafy clump grows upright. Good partners are hardy geraniums, lady's mantle, blue bellflowers or pink roses. In a cottage garden it blends nicely between hollyhocks and ox-eye daisies. The variety looks best in groups of three to five plants, where the panicles merge into a soft pink cloud. Near a seating area you can enjoy the scent especially well on summer evenings.

Butterflies and bees find plenty of nectar in the flowers. In a vase, 'Europa' brings scent and a delicate colour into the house. The perennial is long-lived and, with good care, flowers reliably for many years.

Planting

Plant the phlox in spring (March to May) or in autumn (September to October). Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and set the plant so that the shoot buds sit just below the soil surface. Space the plants 40–50 cm apart so that air can circulate between them. Water in thoroughly.

Care

In dry weeks water deeply and always at the base, not over the leaves, which helps prevent mildew. Add a layer of compost in spring. Remove faded panicles to extend the flowering period. Cut back to ground level in late autumn and divide the clump every few years.
