  • Height about 35–45 cm

'Golden Dawn' is a many-flowered Tazetta narcissus with four to five small yellow flowers on each stem. The cup is orange and becomes even stronger as the flower ages. It has a sweet, slightly musky scent and flowers late, in April and May, when many other daffodils are over.

About this variety

With 'Golden Dawn', each stem carries a small bouquet of four to five flowers. The petals are canary yellow with a slight greenish sheen, and the small cups are orange. Over time the orange deepens, so one plant shows several shades. The flowers face sideways and give off a sweet scent.

At around 35–45 cm tall, it suits beds and borders near a seating area, rock gardens and pots. Because it flowers late, it extends the daffodil season into May. With 100 bulbs you can create several fragrant groups. Good companions are late tulips, forget-me-nots and blue camassias.

In the vase, 'Golden Dawn' fills a room with scent. As a Tazetta it needs a little more warmth than other daffodils and does best in mild locations. In colder areas, plant it in a sheltered spot. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. It is of little importance to bees.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, with the tip pointing upwards. A sunny, warm and sheltered spot with free-draining soil is ideal. In exposed locations, pots are the safer choice.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. Cut off faded flower heads. In cold locations, cover the planting spot with leaves or brushwood in winter. Divide dense clumps after a few years. Once cut, daffodils release a slime into the water that harms other flowers: stand them on their own for a few hours before mixing them.
