Tricyrtis formosana 'Purple Beauty' is a toad lily with white flowers so densely dotted with violet that they look almost purple. They appear from August to October on upright stems above glossy foliage. An exotic-looking perennial for shady spots.

About this variety

'Purple Beauty' shows how finely marked toad lilies can be. The six petals have a pale base colour and are covered with numerous violet dots, with a yellow shimmer in the throat. The flowers stand in loose clusters at the shoot tips. They look like small orchids.

At about 80–100 cm tall it belongs in the middle of partly shaded borders or at a woodland edge. It loves humus-rich, moist soil, loamy or sandy, and a spot out of the fierce midday sun. Plant it near a path, because the beauty of the flowers shows up close. Hostas, ferns, coral bells and Japanese forest grasses go well with it.

As it only flowers in late summer, it brings new colour to the shade border when astilbes and hostas have long finished. The perennial is hardy and long-lived and spreads slowly by short runners. It also looks good in large pots by a shady seating area.

Planting

Plant from March to May or in September and October in a partly shaded to shady spot. The soil should be humus-rich, moist and free-draining. Make the planting hole twice the size of the root ball and set the root collar just below the surface. Space plants 30–40 cm apart and water in.

Care

Water during dry spells; the soil should never dry out completely. A layer of leaf compost in spring is enough. Cut back to ground level in late winter and mulch with leaves in winter. Protect the young shoots from slugs and snails.
