Dahlia imperialis, the tree dahlia, is a wild species from Central America that grows up to 3 m tall in a single season. Its thick, bamboo-like stems and large leaves look almost tropical. In late summer and autumn, nodding, single pink flowers of around 13 cm appear.

About this variety

Dahlia imperialis is not an ordinary garden dahlia but a wild species from Mexico, Central America and Colombia. Thick, bamboo-like stems shoot up from the tuber and reach up to 3 m in one summer. They carry large, pinnate leaves in dark to blue-green. The flowers are single, slightly nodding and pink with a yellow centre, about 13 cm across.

In the garden the tree dahlia is a focal point for the back of a border or a corner that needs something tall. It provides a lush backdrop for summer perennials and goes well with bananas, castor oil plants or tall grasses in an exotic-looking planting. It is also impressive in a cottage or wildlife garden. Because of its size it is only partly suitable for pots.

The flowers open late in the season. It flowers best in mild, sheltered locations with a long, frost-free autumn. In harsher areas an early frost can finish off the buds; the plant is then still worthwhile for its stature and foliage alone. Any flowers that do open are popular with bees.

Planting

Plant the tubers outdoors after the Ice Saints (mid-May), about 10–15 cm deep. For a longer head start you can pre-sprout them indoors in large pots from March. Choose a warm spot in full sun and, above all, sheltered from wind, for example in front of a house wall. The soil should be moist, rich and free-draining.

Care

Water generously in summer, as the plant grows very fast, but still avoid waterlogging. Regular feeding until August supports growth. Tie the tall stems firmly to a sturdy post. After the first frost, cut back the stems, lift the tubers and overwinter them frost-free.
