  • Rich, glowing red, visible from afar
  • Large, classically egg-shaped flowers
  • Flowers in April
  • Height 45–55 cm, strong stems
  • For mass planting, large containers and the vase

'Escape' is a classic Triumph tulip in rich, glowing red. The large, egg-shaped flowers can be seen from afar and stand on strong stems. An easy, reliable variety for large groups in the bed and for bouquets.

About this variety

Sometimes all you need is a clear red. 'Escape' delivers it in its purest form: the flowers have the typical smooth egg shape of Triumph tulips and glow in a rich, warm red. They are large and stand upright, so even a small group makes a strong impression. In the sun they open into wide cups and reveal their dark interior.

At 45–55 cm tall 'Escape' belongs in the middle of beds and borders. It tolerates sun and light shade. Large drifts of red tulips look festive, especially against dark green or next to white daffodils. Blue forget-me-nots or grape hyacinths below provide a fresh contrast. In large containers on balconies and terraces it can be used as the top layer of a bulb lasagne above crocuses.

It lasts well in the vase and makes a classic spring bouquet on its own. Cut the stems when the buds are coloured. It is of little interest to bees. Like many garden tulips, 'Escape' flowers best in the first year; topping up in autumn keeps the planting dense and even.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, ideally in October and November once the soil has cooled. Set them 10–15 cm deep with the tip pointing up and 10–12 cm apart. For a strong splash of colour, plant in groups of 10 or more. Sun to light shade and free-draining soil are ideal; loosen heavy soil with sand or grit. In large containers, plant more closely.

Care

Water in dry spring weather. Pinch off faded flowers and leave the foliage until it is yellow. The bulbs can stay in the ground; for a full display every year, top up with new bulbs or lift and store them dry. A planting basket protects against voles. Protect pots from constant wet in winter.
