'Jimmy' glows like a sunset: coral-orange flowers flushed with raspberry pink and edged in gold. The warm tones change with the light and go with almost any other colour. This proven Triumph tulip stands firm in the wind and is a rewarding cut flower.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Jimmy' are a warm blend of colours. A deep coral orange is overlaid with raspberry pink, and the edges glow golden as if lit from behind. In the morning they look softer, in the evening light they glow. The blue-green foliage forms a calm background.

At 45–55 cm tall, 'Jimmy' is versatile: in large groups in the bed, in mixed borders, at woodland edges or in large containers. With yellow and lime-green tones it creates a cheerful picture; with pink, purple and blue a harmonious one. Try it above a carpet of forget-me-nots or in a bulb lasagne with grape hyacinths. It also finds a good place in the rock garden or in front of shrubs.

Feel free to plant a few extra bulbs for the vase, as the flowers last a long time. The variety was introduced in 1966 and has proved itself ever since. Bees rarely visit it. Like many garden tulips, it flowers most profusely in its first year. Cut the stems as soon as the buds are coloured and the colours will keep developing in the vase.

Planting

Plant between September and December, ideally in October or November when the soil is cool. The bulbs go 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart. Groups of 10 or more show the play of colour best. A sunny position with free-draining soil is ideal; in loam or clay add some grit to the planting hole. In a large container the bulbs can stand shoulder to shoulder.

Care

Water in spring when it is dry. Snip off faded heads and leave the leaves until they turn yellow. The bulbs can stay in the ground, but for strong flowers every year it is better to replant or store the bulbs dry after the foliage dies back. A planting basket keeps voles away. Protect pots from constant wet in winter.
