  • Golden-yellow trumpet daffodil
  • Upward-facing flowers
  • Very early flowering in March
  • High above the foliage, 35–45 cm
  • Trumpet slightly ruffled at the rim

'Barenwyn' is one of the earliest trumpet daffodils. Its golden-yellow flowers open as early as March and face upwards rather than sideways. Carried high above the foliage, they catch the eye immediately, in the garden and in the vase.

About this variety

Most daffodils nod slightly to the side. 'Barenwyn', by contrast, lifts its flowers upwards, as if looking towards the spring. The trumpet is golden yellow, a little wider than on classic trumpet daffodils and slightly ruffled at the rim. The stems carry the flowers well above the foliage. It is one of the first large daffodils of the season and opens the trumpet daffodil parade.

At 35–45 cm tall, 'Barenwyn' belongs in the middle of borders, at woodland edges or in groups in the lawn. As it flowers so early, it goes well with crocuses, squills and Christmas roses. With blue grape hyacinths beneath it creates a classic spring picture. It also looks good in large containers.

'Barenwyn' is popular as a cut flower, and its upright flowers look good in bouquets. Daffodils naturalise readily and come back every year. Voles and deer avoid daffodils, as all parts are poisonous. This makes the bulbs suitable for gardens where tulips are regularly eaten.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partly shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal. In heavy soil, add some sand to the planting hole to prevent waterlogging.

Care

Leave the foliage for at least six weeks after flowering until it yellows, as this is how the bulb forms next year's flowers. Pinch off faded flowers. In a lawn, do not mow until the foliage has died back. Daffodils are poisonous; their stem sap harms other cut flowers, so stand them in water on their own for a few hours first.
