  • Bicoloured trumpet daffodil
  • White petals, yellow trumpet
  • Flowers in April
  • Height about 35–45 cm
  • Naturalises well, lovely cut flower

'Magnet' is a bicoloured trumpet daffodil with white petals and a yellow trumpet. The fresh contrast catches the eye in April. This robust variety suits beds, meadows and woodland edges and is a lovely cut flower for spring bouquets. Robust and reliable.

About this variety

Trumpet daffodils have a corona at least as long as the petals. In 'Magnet' this trumpet glows yellow, while the petals are white. The contrast looks bright and friendly and makes the variety a popular bicoloured trumpet daffodil.

At around 35–45 cm tall, it suits beds, borders, meadows and the woodland edge. The two-tone effect is especially lovely in groups of ten or more. Combine it with all-yellow trumpet daffodils, blue grape hyacinths or white tulips. In containers by the front door it greets the spring. If you want a longer flowering season, combine 'Magnet' with earlier and later varieties. That way the daffodil season in the garden runs from March to May, and every week new flowers open in different colours and shapes.

As a cut flower it is a classic choice for an Easter bouquet. The bulbs naturalise and form strong clumps over the years. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. Daffodils are of little interest to bees, but together with crocuses and grape hyacinths they make a varied spring bed.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, tip upwards. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal. Avoid waterlogging.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. Pinch off the large flowers once they fade. In a lawn, only mow once the leaves have died back. Divide dense clumps after a few years. For mixed bouquets, stand the daffodils in water on their own for half a day first, as their sap makes other cut flowers wilt.
