Tuberose 'The Pearl' is one of the most strongly scented flowers of all. Double, waxy white flowers open one after another on a slender stem. In the evening its sweet scent fills the whole terrace. The tuberose has been famous in perfumery for centuries.

About this variety

'The Pearl' is the double form of the tuberose. Its flowers are densely packed with petals, pure white and waxy in texture. They sit in a long spike at the top of the stem and open from the bottom upwards. The narrow, grassy foliage stays at ground level and leaves the flowers standing free.

At about 70–90 cm tall, it belongs in a pot on the terrace or balcony, close to a seating area where you can enjoy the scent. In the border it goes well with grasses, lavender and white flowering tobacco. Several tubers in a wide container make a lush display.

In the vase the tuberose is an experience: just a few stems fill a room with scent. Cut them when the lower flowers are open; the upper ones will follow in the vase. It is of hardly any importance to bees here. Once you have experienced the scent, you will want it again every summer.

Planting

Start the tubers in pots indoors from March and plant them outside after the Ice Saints (mid-May). The tip stays just covered with soil, about 3–5 cm deep. Space them 15–20 cm apart. Warmth is crucial: a sheltered spot in full sun produces the best flowers.

Care

Water regularly once growth starts and feed every two weeks until flowering. Support tall stems if needed. In autumn, before the frost, lift the tubers or bring the pot indoors and overwinter dry and frost-free at about 15 °C. Not suitable for eating; keep away from children and pets.
