  • Purple flower globes of around 15 cm
  • About 100–120 cm tall, very sturdy
  • Flowers in May and June
  • Needs little space at ground level
  • Classically combined with white 'Mount Everest'

'Gladiator' is one of the tallest ornamental onions. Its purple globes, around 15 cm across, stand on very sturdy stems of about 100–120 cm. It adds vertical accents without taking up much space at ground level.

About this variety

Tall, strong and reliable: 'Gladiator' lives up to its name. Very sturdy stems rise from blue-green foliage, topped by dense globes of many small star-shaped flowers. Their purple is warm and glows even from a distance. As the plant grows upwards rather than outwards, it fits even into full borders.

At about 100–120 cm tall, 'Gladiator' belongs at the back or rises out of medium-height perennials. A proven combination is mixing it with the white 'Mount Everest'. It looks just as lovely above peonies, catmint and lady's mantle, which hide the early-dying foliage. Eight bulbs make an impressive group.

Bees and bumblebees like to visit the globes in late spring. The long stems make 'Gladiator' a strong cut flower for large vases. The seed heads also stay attractive for a long time. Voles and deer usually avoid the bulbs because of their onion smell. They are also hardy at higher altitudes.

Planting

Plant the large bulbs from September to November about 15–20 cm deep, tip upwards. Keep 25–30 cm between them. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil; in heavy soil, add some sand to the planting hole.

Care

The foliage often dies back as early as flowering time. Still leave it until it has turned completely yellow so the bulb can build up enough reserves. Low perennials in front hide the withered leaves. Feeding is hardly necessary; one dose of compost in spring is enough. Divide dense clumps in autumn after a few years.
