  • Dark red, velvety trumpet flowers
  • Contrasting white star in the centre
  • Flowers indoors from December to February
  • About 50–60 cm tall, strong stems
  • Good cut flower for bouquets

'Barbados' shows large, velvety flowers in deep red, with a white star glowing in the centre. The contrast is strong and festive. With five bulbs you can decorate several windows or give some away.

About this variety

The red of 'Barbados' is dark and warm, almost burgundy. From the centre, a bright white star radiates into the petals. The velvety surface softly absorbs the light. The flowers open in several directions on the stalk and so look beautiful from every side. Even the plump bud on the stalk builds anticipation, as it opens a little further each day.

The plant grows about 50–60 cm tall and stands on solid stems. It suits the windowsill, the stairwell or the festive table. White amaryllis or Christmas roses pick up the star in the flower. A combination with ivy or small ferns around the edge of the pot also looks lovely. A covering of moss or gravel hides the soil and makes everything look neat.

Cut, it lasts well in bouquets, though it has no scent. Six to twelve weeks pass from planting to flowering, and it often opens only after Christmas. Planted in batches, it flowers for many weeks. This makes it suitable for people with little time for plant care, too. A single bulb also makes a lovely present for hosts during Advent.

Planting

Plant between October and January, depending on when you want the flowers. Set the bulb in the soil so that about half stays exposed, in a pot that is barely wider than the bulb. Keep only slightly moist at first. Placed somewhere bright and warm, it will push up its stalk after a few weeks.

Care

After flowering, cut off only the stalk and let the leaves keep growing. Water and feed regularly until summer so the bulb can build up strength. From August it needs a rest period without water in a cool, dark place. All parts of the plant are toxic, so keep it away from children and pets.
