  • Almost fully double, ruffled flowers
  • Bright, shimmering cherry red
  • Flowers indoors in January and February
  • About 45–55 cm tall, with strong stems
  • Hardly any scent, but long-lasting flowers

'Cherry Nymph' belongs to the Nymph series and produces almost fully double, ruffled flowers in bright cherry red. The thick stems carry the weight of the flowers well. In January and February it is a glowing centrepiece for the table and sideboard.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Cherry Nymph' are densely filled with petals and slightly wavy. Their red has a silky sheen that comes into its own in candlelight. Several flowers open one after another on each stalk. Up close you keep discovering new details in the markings and colour. Especially in the dark season, so much colour in a small space is a real joy.

At about 45–55 cm, it stays manageable and suits tables and windowsills. Next to 'Nymph' in white with red markings, or among fir sprigs and cones, it looks especially festive. A heavy cover pot gives it stability. In a cool guest room at 16 to 18 °C, the flowers also last longer. A conservatory is a good spot too, as long as it stays frost-free.

It is lovely in the vase too, as the double flowers last a long time. It has hardly any scent and is of no value to pollinators. If you care for the bulb in summer, you can bring it into flower again next winter. A strip of tape around the end of the stem stops it from curling. A small stick inside the hollow stem stops it bending under the weight.

Planting

Pot the bulb between October and January in a pot only slightly larger than the bulb itself. A third to half of the bulb stays above the soil. Water well once, then sparingly until the flower stalk appears. A bright, warm spot at about 20 °C brings flowers after six to ten weeks.

Care

Turn the pot every few days so the stalk grows straight. Once flowering is over, leave the foliage, water it into the summer and feed it every two weeks. From August stop watering and give the bulb a rest so that it flowers again in winter. The bulb is toxic and should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
