  • Double flowers of about 14 cm
  • White with a raspberry-red picotee edge
  • Flowers indoors from December to February
  • Usually two stalks with 4–5 flowers
  • About 45–55 cm tall, good in a pot

'Elvas' is a double amaryllis of quiet elegance. Its white flowers carry a fine pink to raspberry-red edge and red brushstrokes towards the centre. It usually produces two strong stalks with several flowers.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Elvas' consist of many petals that swirl around the centre. A fine edge of pink to raspberry red runs along the white ground, along with brushstrokes that become denser towards the centre. The more light it gets, the stronger the red becomes. This makes 'Elvas' a plant you enjoy looking at closely. Many gardeners collect such varieties and look forward to the flowers anew each year.

At about 45–55 cm, it stays compact and suits almost any interior style. A bright spot by the window is ideal. Combine it with white Christmas roses, grey eucalyptus or a red amaryllis for a festive trio. Avoid draughts and direct heat from radiators, however. If the plant is too dark, the stalk becomes long and leans towards the light.

As the flowers open gradually, flowering lasts a long time. Cut, it stays beautiful in the vase; it has no scent. Allow six to eight weeks from planting to flowering, so it is easy to time for Christmas. If you keep caring for the plant after flowering, you will enjoy it for years. A cool room extends the life of each flower by several days.

Planting

Plant between October and January, depending on when you want the flowers. Set the bulb in the soil so that about half stays exposed, in a pot that is barely wider than the bulb. Keep only slightly moist at first. Placed somewhere bright and warm, it will push up its stalk after a few weeks.

Care

Support the stalk with a cane if needed, as the flowers become heavy. After flowering, cut the stalk off just above the bulb but leave the leaves, and keep watering and feeding. From August the bulb needs a rest period without water for the next flowering. Please note: the plant is toxic, keep it away from children and pets.
