  • Every flower with its own pattern
  • Often three stems and 12 or more flowers
  • Slightly wavy petals
  • About 45–55 cm tall, December to February

'Gervase' is an amaryllis with an artistic character. Stripes, veins and brushstrokes in deep pink to carmine run over a pink and white ground, so every flower looks different. A strong bulb often produces three stems with twelve or more flowers. Cheerful, a little playful and ideal for winter guests.

About this variety

Seeing 'Gervase' in flower brings a watercolour to mind. Stripes and brushstrokes in strong pink to carmine lie on a soft pink or white ground, sometimes dense, sometimes fine. No two flowers are alike: some are almost entirely striped, others only lightly touched. The petals are slightly wavy and the filaments reddish.

At 45–55 cm tall, 'Gervase' suits the windowsill, dining table or sideboard. Because it often forms three stems, even one bulb looks lush and flowers over a long period. A simple, pale pot lets the lively pattern stand out. It goes well with green branches, white tulips in a glass or pink hyacinths.

In the vase, the patterned flowers are a talking point with every visitor. Cut the stem when the first bud opens and the others will flower in the vase. With good care, the bulb will surprise you with new patterns the following winter.

Planting

Between October and January is the best time for potting. Choose a heavy, stable container that is barely wider than the bulb, and leave a third to half of the bulb above the soil. Place the pot somewhere warm and bright, for example on a windowsill above a radiator. Water little at first; the plant needs more water only once growth starts.

Care

Cut off faded flowers, and the stalk only once it turns yellow. Then let the leaves keep growing, water regularly and feed every two weeks, in summer ideally outdoors in a sheltered spot. From August stop watering and give the bulb a rest of about eight weeks in a cool, dry place, and it will flower again next winter. All parts of the amaryllis are toxic: not edible, keep away from children and pets.
