  • Pale lemon yellow, rare in amaryllis
  • Apple-green to chartreuse centre
  • Flowers about 18 cm across
  • Flowers indoors from December to March
  • About 50–60 cm tall, flowers freely

Yellow is rare in amaryllis, and 'Lemon Star' comes very close to it. Its flowers are pale lemon yellow with an apple-green centre and look fresh and bright. This variety from the Diamond group flowers freely and brings light to grey winter days.

About this variety

The colour of 'Lemon Star' lies between cream, lemon and pale green. Broad petals with smooth edges form a clear star, with a stronger green glowing in the centre. The result looks more like spring than Christmas. The flowers open in several directions on the stalk and so look beautiful from every side. Even the plump bud on the stalk builds anticipation, as it opens a little further each day.

At about 50–60 cm tall, it suits the windowsill or the conservatory. Next to green plants, white orchids or blue hyacinths, the soft yellow stands out well. You decide when it flowers by choosing the planting date. A combination with ivy or small ferns around the edge of the pot also looks lovely. A covering of moss or gravel hides the soil and makes everything look neat.

Cut, it brings an unusual, bright tone to bouquets. Scent and bees are not an issue. About six to twelve weeks pass between planting and flowering. This makes it suitable for people with little time for plant care, too. A single bulb also makes a lovely present for hosts during Advent.

Planting

Pot the bulb between October and January in a pot only slightly larger than the bulb itself. A third to half of the bulb stays above the soil. Water well once, then sparingly until the flower stalk appears. A bright, warm spot at about 20 °C brings flowers after six to ten weeks.

Care

Keep the soil slightly moist while it is flowering, but never wet. A cooler spot at night extends the flowering period. Afterwards keep caring for and feeding the foliage, then from August keep it dry and let it rest. As all parts of the plant are toxic, keep the pot out of reach of children and pets.
