  • 3 bulbs for a row, a bowl or as gifts
  • Red flowers with a white star
  • Lime-green throat
  • Flowers around 16 cm
  • About 45–55 cm tall, December to February

Three bulbs of the popular 'Minerva' are enough for a whole row of windows or for gifts to family and friends. Each flower shows the classic picture: bright red, a white star towards the centre and a lime-green throat. From December to February the trio brings colour to the house.

About this variety

'Minerva' is one of the best-known amaryllis, and for good reason. The flowers are large, wide open and clearly marked: strong red at the edges, a white star towards the centre and a fresh lime green deep in the throat. On the upper petals the red traces the veins. The result looks lively and festive.

With three bulbs you can create lovely arrangements. Plant them together in a long bowl, spread them over several windowsills or pot them at intervals to extend the flowering period. At 45–55 cm tall they stay well proportioned. With moss, birch bark and white candles, they make an atmospheric winter decoration.

As cut flowers the stems last a long time and combine well with fir sprigs or eucalyptus. A potted bulb also makes a welcome present. With a rest period in late summer, all three flower again the next winter. Potting them two to three weeks apart ensures that one bulb is always in full flower.

Planting

Between October and January is the best time for potting. Choose a heavy, stable container that is barely wider than the bulb, and leave a third to half of the bulb above the soil. Place the pot somewhere warm and bright, for example on a windowsill above a radiator. Water little at first; the plant needs more water only once growth starts.

Care

Cut off faded flowers, and the stalk only once it turns yellow. Then let the leaves keep growing, water regularly and feed every two weeks, in summer ideally outdoors in a sheltered spot. From August stop watering and give the bulb a rest of about eight weeks in a cool, dry place, and it will flower again next winter. All parts of the amaryllis are toxic: not edible, keep away from children and pets.
