  • Even, bright orange

  • Velvety, star-shaped flowers around 16 cm
  • Flowers from December to February
  • About 45–55 cm tall

'Orange Sovereign' is a long-valued amaryllis in a colour that is rare in winter: an even, bright, warm orange. The large, star-shaped flowers have velvety petals with a golden sheen. From December to February it brings warmth to any home.

About this variety

Orange is an exception among amaryllis, and 'Orange Sovereign' shows it at its finest. The flowers glow in a clear, warm tone without stripes or spots. When the light catches them, the velvety petals gleam slightly golden. The flowers are star-shaped and large, and several open one after another on a stem.

At 45–55 cm tall, the variety suits the windowsill, coffee table or conservatory. It looks especially at home in rooms with wood, terracotta or warm textiles. Combine it with orange branches, dried orange slices or copper for a warm, natural decoration away from the classic reds.

In the vase the flower lasts a long time and adds a cheerful splash of colour to bouquets. The variety is robust and needs little care. Give it light, water and feed after flowering and you will see it flower again next winter. In the short days between December and February, the warm orange looks like a piece of sunshine on the windowsill and recalls a late summer evening.

Planting

Plant the bulb between October and January in a pot with a 2–3 cm margin around the bulb. The top half to a third stays above the soil so the bulb does not rot. A bright, warm windowsill is ideal. Keep the soil only slightly moist until growth starts, then water more. Turn the pot now and then so the stem grows straight.

Care

For the bulb to flower again next year, leave the leaves after flowering and give the plant water and liquid feed until summer. From August stop watering and put the pot somewhere cool and dry. After about eight to ten weeks of rest, bring it back into the warmth. Please note that all parts of the plant are toxic: not edible, keep away from children and pets.
