  • Flowers up to about 22 cm
  • Flowers indoors in January and February
  • About 50–70 cm tall, often several stems

'Quito' is one of the Cybister types and has little in common with the classic trumpet shape. Its flowers consist of narrow, pointed petals in red with green and cream markings. The result is an airy, almost wild silhouette.

About this variety

The petals of 'Quito' are narrow and taper to a point, with space between them. Red dominates, with greenish and pale tones at the base and fine veins running through. Long pale filaments with golden-yellow anthers protrude well beyond the flower. The broad, glossy leaves usually appear during or after flowering and frame it in green. The strong, hollow stem grows astonishingly fast; sometimes you can see the progress almost daily.

At about 50–70 cm tall, it makes a striking sight on the windowsill. A simple, dark pot underlines its graphic form. It goes well with succulents, ferns or other unusual houseplants. For groups, several bulbs fit in a wide, shallow bowl. On a table at eye level, the flower shape shows to best effect.

Because it often produces several stems, flowering lasts a long time. In a vase, a single stem already looks very exotic. It has no scent. It is named after the capital of Ecuador; the wild form of the Cybister types comes from South America. Trim the stem a little every few days and give it fresh water. Especially after the holidays, when the decorations come down, it remains a bright spot.

Planting

Pot the bulb between October and January in a pot only slightly larger than the bulb itself. A third to half of the bulb stays above the soil. Water thoroughly once, then sparingly until the flower stem appears. A bright, warm spot at about 20 °C brings flowers after six to ten weeks.

Care

Support the stem with a stake if needed, as the flowers become heavy. After flowering, cut the stem just above the bulb but leave the leaves, and keep watering and feeding. From August, the bulb needs a rest without water for the next flowering. Caution: the plant is poisonous, keep away from children and pets.
