  • Double Asiatic lily in soft pink
  • Flowers about 11 cm, facing upwards
  • Hardly any pollen, no stains
  • Flowers in July and August
  • About 90–110 cm tall, for beds and borders

'Elodie' is a double Asiatic lily in soft pink. Its flowers consist of many layers of petals and show only a few dark dots in the centre. As it produces hardly any pollen, it is also pleasant for sensitive people.

About this variety

Double lilies look like small roses, and 'Elodie' is a particularly lovely example. Its soft pink petals lie in several layers on top of one another, with a hint of cream mixed in. There are a few dark spots towards the centre. The flowers reach about 11 cm and open upwards.

At about 90–110 cm tall, it suits beds and borders, ideally in small groups. Romantic companions are roses, lady's mantle, lavender or catmint. It also looks delicate and harmonious next to white bellflowers. It tolerates many soil types, from chalky to clay. It does only moderately well in pots.

Because double lilies produce hardly any pollen, there are no yellow stains on clothes or furniture. For the same reason, it is of little interest to pollinators. On poor soils, the double flowers sometimes only show fully in the second year. After that, the plant produces more flowers every year, in July and August.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn from September to November or in spring from February to May. Set them 15–20 cm deep, about three times the height of the bulb, 20 cm apart. A sunny to partly shaded spot with moist, well-drained soil is ideal. Chalky, clay, loamy or sandy soil is tolerated as long as water does not collect.

Care

Water in dry periods and avoid waterlogging. A phosphorus-rich bulb fertiliser in spring encourages the double flowers. Watch out for the lily beetle. Let the foliage die back after flowering; the bulbs are hardy even at higher altitudes. Lilies are poisonous to cats, including all parts of the plant and the vase water.
