  • Semi-double, scarlet to cherry-red flowers of around 7 cm
  • Flowers in large clusters of cups
  • Grows about 390–410 cm tall
  • Sun to partial shade
  • Pliable shoots, easy to train

'Paul's Scarlet Climber' is a classic among red climbing roses. Large clusters of semi-double, scarlet flowers cover walls, fences and rose arches. The plant grows strongly, is robust and copes with both sun and partial shade.

About this variety

When this rose flowers, the whole wall glows. 'Paul's Scarlet Climber' bears cup-shaped, semi-double flowers of about 7 cm in strong scarlet that gradually turns cherry red. They appear in large clusters, so the shoots are densely covered in colour. The fragrance is light and subtle.

At about 390–410 cm tall and around 250 cm wide, it is ideal for house walls, pergolas, rose arches and fences. The pliable shoots are easy to train horizontally, which encourages flowering. White clematis or a blue clematis such as 'Perle d'Azur' make a lovely contrast to the red. Lavender and hardy geraniums suit its base. The rose is only partly suitable for large containers.

This variety has been grown in gardens for over a century and is considered reliable. It tolerates almost any soil and some shade. Individual clusters can be cut for the vase, where the red livens up any arrangement. Its greatest effect, however, is in the garden, as a red wall in early summer.

Planting

Bare-root plants are best planted from October to April when the ground is not frozen. Soak the roots in water for a few hours beforehand. Set the graft union about 5 cm deep and keep 30–40 cm away from the wall and 175–250 cm from other climbers. A sunny to partially shaded spot with moist soil suits it well.

Care

Water regularly by walls, as the soil there dries out quickly. Feed in spring and after the first flush. Tie the shoots firmly to a trellis or frame. In spring, remove old and dead wood and shorten the side shoots. The rose is hardy in Switzerland, even at higher altitudes.
