  • Creamy-yellow cups with a deep golden-yellow throat
  • Bright orange stigmas
  • Flowers in February and March
  • About 5–15 cm tall
  • 70 corms for groups in lawns and beds

'Cream Beauty' is an early botanical crocus in a soft creamy yellow. Inside, the flower is a little darker and has a deep golden-yellow throat with orange stigmas. Instead of bright colours it brings soft light to late winter and multiplies if left undisturbed.

About this variety

Many crocuses rely on strong colours. 'Cream Beauty', by contrast, looks gentle: pale creamy yellow outside, often with a slight brownish tinge, and a little darker inside. At the base glows a golden-yellow throat, with orange stigmas above. The rounded cups last a long time and open wide in the sun. For decades the variety has been regarded as one of the most reliable chrysanthus crocuses. Its flowers last surprisingly long even in cool weather and hardly fade.

At about 5–15 cm tall, this variety belongs at the edge of beds and rock gardens or in larger groups in the lawn. It does well under deciduous shrubs and among roses that leaf out late. In pots and window boxes you can see the flowers up close. Blue partners such as glory-of-the-snow or reticulata iris go particularly well.

The flowers provide nectar and pollen for bees early in the year. If the corms are left undisturbed, they multiply and naturalise. Crocuses are, however, popular with mice. Where voles are present, it is best to plant the corms in a wire basket.

Planting

Plant the corms between August and November, pointed end up, 5–8 cm deep and 5–8 cm apart. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil. In pots, use potting compost with a little sand and make sure there is a drainage hole.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. In a lawn, wait to mow until the leaves have died back. Keep watering potted crocuses moderately after flowering until the foliage withers. You can divide dense clumps after a few years.
