  • Butter-yellow goblets with a deep golden centre
  • Paler cream-yellow outside, with faint grey markings at the base
  • Flowers in February and March
  • About 5–15 cm tall
  • Multiplies quickly, 50 corms for several groups

'Romance' is an early species crocus in soft butter yellow. The outside of the goblets is paler, almost cream, while a deeper golden centre glows inside. After a long winter it brings warm light to lawns and beds, opens wide in the sun and returns every year with more flowers.

About this variety

The colour of 'Romance' is not harsh but soft and warm. The outside of the petals is pale cream-yellow, often with a fine grey haze at the base. When the flower opens in the sun, it shows a rich butter yellow with a golden heart. In rain and in the evening it closes again, protecting the pollen.

At about 5–15 cm tall, this crocus belongs at the front. Plant it in groups of ten or more corms in the lawn, in rock gardens, along the edges of beds or in bowls on the patio. It tolerates sun and light partial shade. Next to violet Crocus tommasinianus or blue grape hyacinths, the yellow looks especially fresh. It also makes a good companion for large-flowered crocuses, as it flowers a little earlier.

For bees, 'Romance' is an early source of pollen and nectar. In a sunny spot with free-draining soil it multiplies reliably and naturalises. Mice are fond of crocus corms, however. Where voles are active, protect the corms with a wire basket.

Planting

Plant the corms from August to November, tip upwards, 5–8 cm deep and 5–8 cm apart. A sunny spot and free-draining soil are ideal. In a lawn, place the corms in small planting holes or under lifted pieces of turf.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. In a lawn, wait to mow until the leaves have died back. Feeding is not necessary. If the clumps become dense after a few years, divide them in late summer.
