  • Several stems and several flowers per bulb
  • Reflexed petals, pale yellow to cream
  • Small orange-yellow cup
  • Dwarf habit, about 15–25 cm tall
  • Flowers in March and April

'Eaton Song' is a small, very free-flowering daffodil. Each bulb produces several stems with several flowers, whose reflexed petals open pale yellow and fade to cream. At the centre sits a small orange-yellow cup. Ideal for pots and small groups at the front of a bed.

About this variety

'Eaton Song' is an American cultivar from 1973. The petals sweep backwards and give the flower a sense of movement. They open in a soft primrose yellow and lighten to cream, while the small cup fades from orange-yellow to yellow. A single plant therefore shows several shades at once.

At around 15–25 cm tall, it belongs in pots, window boxes, the rock garden and at the front of a bed. Dense groups of 25 bulbs create a small carpet of flowers. Good partners are grape hyacinths, puschkinias and violas. It copes well beneath deciduous shrubs. In a bulb lasagne in a pot, put 'Eaton Song' in the top layer, with larger daffodils or tulips beneath that flower later. That way the pot stays in flower for weeks, and the fine foliage of the little daffodil hardly disturbs the later bloomers.

A few stems are enough for a small vase. The plant flowers very freely and multiplies over the years. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. The early flowers are occasionally visited by bees.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, about 10 cm deep and 5–10 cm apart, with the tip upwards. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil is ideal. In pots, set the bulbs close together.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. Keep potted plants slightly moist while in growth and dry in summer. Divide dense clumps after a few years. All parts of daffodils are poisonous. Wear gloves when planting, as the sap can irritate the skin.
