'Fortune' is a classic from 1917 and was once one of the most sought-after daffodils in the world. The flowers, about 10 cm across, have yellow petals and a soft orange cup. It naturalises reliably and is ideal for large plantings.

About this variety

'Fortune' has a long history: when it came onto the market around 1917, it was one of the most sought-after daffodils of all. To this day it has lost none of its appeal. The large flowers show yellow petals and a cup in soft orange, which fades a little to yellow as the flower ages.

At around 35–45 cm tall, it suits meadows, lawns, woodland edges and large groups in the border. It also tolerates some shade. Combine it with blue grape hyacinths, white daffodils or emerging hostas. It is also easy to force in containers. For a generous effect, plant at least 25 bulbs together. Over the years, large areas develop into a dense carpet of yellow and orange that returns every spring with no further effort.

As a cut flower, 'Fortune' brings a light scent indoors. The bulbs naturalise very reliably and form dense stands over the years. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. It is of little importance to bees.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, tip upwards. Sun to partial shade and free-draining soil are ideal. For a natural effect, spread the bulbs loosely in irregular groups.

Care

Let the foliage turn yellow after flowering before you remove it. Pinch off faded flowers in the bed. In a meadow, only mow once the leaves have died back. Divide dense clumps after a few years. Freshly cut daffodils release a slime into the water that harms other flowers: stand them on their own for a few hours before mixing them.
