'Polar Hunter' is a novelty from New Zealand with a rare colouring: the flowers open green and lighten to greenish white and ivory. Up to four flowers sit on one stem and are strongly scented. It is one of the earliest daffodils of the year.

About this variety

Green daffodils are a rarity. The colour of 'Polar Hunter' comes from the green-flowered wild species Narcissus viridiflorus. Olive to chartreuse-green buds open into flowers that are green at first and then slowly fade through greenish white to ivory. The variety was bred in New Zealand and registered in 2020. Up to four flowers open one after another on each stem.

At 35–45 cm tall, 'Polar Hunter' looks good in pots and in groups along the woodland edge. Next to Christmas roses and early crocuses, its delicate colouring shows well. It also suits dark foliage or ferns. Because it flowers so early, it opens the daffodil season.

The scent is strong, typical of jonquils. In the vase you can follow the colour change up close. The bulbs return every year. Voles and deer avoid daffodils, as all parts are poisonous. For collectors and lovers of unusual colours it is a special find.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to November, in groups 10–15 cm deep. A spacing of 10–15 cm is enough. Point the tip upwards and firm the soil well. Choose a spot in sun or partial shade with free-draining soil.

Care

Pinch off faded flowers and let the green foliage die back before removing it. In pots, water regularly during growth and flowering. Divide groups that have become dense every few years. Remember that daffodils are poisonous and that their sap harms other flowers in the vase; stand them in water on their own for a few hours first.
