  • Delicate scent
  • Late flowers from April to May
  • Historic variety from before 1936

'Polar Ice' is an old, rediscovered daffodil with ice-white petals and a small, ruffled cup. The cup opens lemon yellow, turns white and keeps a green eye. It is scented, flowers late and naturalises readily in meadows and beds.

About this variety

'Polar Ice' dates from before 1936 and had almost disappeared until a Dutch collector rediscovered it. The flower is simple and refined: broad, cool white petals with a small, slightly ruffled cup at the centre. The cup is lemon yellow at first, then lightens to white and keeps a green eye at its base. Because of its similarity to the Poeticus narcissi, it is also counted among this group.

At around 45–55 cm tall, it suits borders, woodland edges and wildflower meadows. Because it flowers late, it links the daffodil season with the tulip season. It combines beautifully with late white or purple tulips, alliums or blue bluebells. In containers with forget-me-nots it looks fresh and clear.

As a cut flower it is elegant and delicately scented. Voles and deer mostly avoid daffodils. 'Polar Ice' is uncomplicated and forms ever denser clumps over the years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining, moist soil is ideal. Set the bulbs in groups, or scatter them loosely in a lawn. Avoid waterlogging.

Care

Leave the foliage until it turns yellow, so that the bulb gathers strength for next year. In a meadow, only mow after that. You can divide dense clumps after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous, and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
