  • Cup changes from yellow to apricot pink
  • Petals ivory to white, flowers about 8 cm
  • Flowers from March to April
  • Height about 45–55 cm
  • Long-lived, reliable variety since 1960

'Salome' is one of the classic pink daffodils. Its long, funnel-shaped cup opens primrose yellow and then turns apricot to peach pink, while the petals lighten from ivory to white. The flowers last a long time, both in the garden and in the vase.

About this variety

'Salome' was introduced in 1960 and has since proved itself as a reliable pink daffodil. The flower changes as it matures: the long, funnel-shaped cup opens primrose yellow, then takes on a warm apricot tone and finally turns peach pink. The petals start creamy white and become pure white. A group therefore always shows several shades at once.

At around 45–55 cm tall, it is a good choice for spring borders and naturalistic plantings. The cup colours best in light shade or filtered light, for example along the woodland edge. Combine it with white daffodils, pink tulips or blue grape hyacinths. It also looks delicate in containers.

The flowers last a long time in the garden and in the vase, which makes it a popular cut flower. Voles and deer mostly avoid daffodils. 'Salome' is regarded as a vigorous, long-lived variety that returns for many years and multiplies well.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A partially shaded spot or light sun brings out the pink colour best. The soil should be free-draining and moist. Plant in groups of at least seven bulbs.

Care

Pinch off faded flowers so that the plant does not put energy into seed. Leave the foliage until it turns yellow, as it prepares next year's flowers. You can divide dense clumps after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous, and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
