'Sneezy' is a low, single-flowered dahlia with pure white flowers and a golden-yellow heart. The plant grows only about 45–55 cm tall and covers itself in countless flowers from July to October. Bees and butterflies love the open centre, and it looks good in a pot.

About this variety

The beauty of 'Sneezy' lies in its simplicity. Broad, pure white petals frame a golden-yellow centre. The flowers measure about 7 cm and appear in great numbers above dense green foliage. The plant stays low and bushy at around 45–55 cm. This gives it a look that is both fresh and calm. Once you have grown it, you will appreciate how undemanding it is.

It fits effortlessly into the front of a bed, a border or a cottage garden. It goes with blue bellflowers, lavender or ornamental sage and brings calm to colourful plantings. It is also a good choice for patio pots and balcony boxes. In natural-style gardens it complements wild perennials such as ox-eye daisies and yarrow.

Single dahlias are valuable for bees, bumblebees and butterflies, as their pollen and nectar are easy to reach. 'Sneezy' offers this food from July until the frost. You can also cut the flowers for small posies. Regular deadheading keeps the plant flowering into autumn. This is especially valuable in late summer, when food becomes scarce.

Planting

Plant the tubers outdoors after the Ice Saints, from mid-May. The planting depth is 10–15 cm and the spacing 40–60 cm. From March you can start the tubers indoors. Choose a sunny spot with moist, well-drained soil, as this variety does not tolerate waterlogging.

Care

Water regularly with moderate amounts, and daily in pots on warm days. A liquid feed every two weeks helps plants in pots. A stake is usually not needed for this low variety. After the first frost, lift the tubers and store them somewhere frost-free over winter.
