  • 15 double daffodil bulbs
  • Various colour combinations in yellow, white, orange
  • Full, lush flowers
  • Flowers in March and April
  • Height about 35–45 cm

This mix brings together double daffodils in various colour combinations. The flowers are full and lush and bring varied abundance to the bed in March and April. With 15 bulbs you get a colourful group that also looks lovely in the vase.

About this variety

Instead of a simple corona, double daffodils have many layers of petals. This makes the flowers look round and lush, often like small roses or peonies. This mix brings together several varieties, so yellow, white and orange appear in different combinations. Every planting therefore looks a little different.

At around 35–45 cm tall, they suit groups in beds and borders, cottage gardens and containers. Plant them among perennials whose foliage later hides the yellowing leaves, such as daylilies or hostas. Blue grape hyacinths or forget-me-nots are lovely companions. For a harmonious effect, set the bulbs in loose groups of five to ten rather than scattering them singly across the bed. The double flowers also make a fine show in large pots and window boxes when planted close together.

In the vase, double daffodils are particularly decorative and last well. The bulbs return every year and multiply slowly. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. Double flowers are hardly accessible to bees, however, so for a wildlife garden it is better to add crocuses or grape hyacinths.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart, tip upwards. A sunny to partially shaded, somewhat sheltered spot with free-draining soil is ideal. Mix the bulbs well before planting.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. Pinch off faded flowers. The heavy flowers can topple a little in rain, so a sheltered position helps. Divide dense clumps after a few years. For mixed bouquets, stand the daffodils in water on their own for half a day first, as their sap makes other cut flowers wilt.
