'Replete' is a double daffodil that breaks away from the classic yellow. Creamy white petals surround a densely ruffled centre in peach, salmon and pink. The flowers recall roses or gardenias, are lightly scented and last a long time in the vase.

About this variety

There are many double daffodils, but 'Replete' stands out for its colour. The outer petals are ivory white. At the centre stand layers of ruffled, finely slit segments in peach, salmon and pink. The flower, about 10 cm across, looks lush and romantic. The variety was introduced in 1975 by the American breeder Murray Evans.

At around 45–55 cm tall and with strong stems, it suits borders, cottage gardens and large containers. Combine it with pink tulips, white hyacinths or blue forget-me-nots to emphasise its soft tones. Against dark foliage, such as that of heuchera, the flowers glow especially brightly. A sheltered spot protects the double flowers from rain.

In the vase, 'Replete' is an unusual choice for spring bouquets and gives off a light scent. Voles and deer mostly avoid daffodils. The plants are robust and form full clumps after two to three years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December with the tip pointing upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. Choose a sunny to partially shaded spot, as sheltered from wind as possible, with free-draining soil. In light shade the pink tones of the centre stay stronger. Set five to seven bulbs together.

Care

Pinch off faded flowers and leave the foliage until it turns yellow. This is how the bulb gathers strength for next year. You can divide dense clumps after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous, and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
