  • Height about 35–45 cm

'Texas' is a heritage double daffodil that was already growing in gardens before 1921. Its full flowers are soft yellow, with irregularly scattered orange segments shining between the petals. A variety with nostalgic charm for cottage gardens, borders and spring bouquets.

About this variety

Double daffodils were already popular a hundred years ago, and 'Texas' dates from that time. Its flowers are densely filled with petals. The outer ones are soft yellow, with short, broken segments in strong orange between them. The result is a lively, slightly irregular flower reminiscent of old garden pictures. Every flower looks a little different.

At about 35–45 cm tall, it belongs in cottage gardens, borders and mixed spring beds. Plant it in groups of seven to ten bulbs. Good companions are blue grape hyacinths, forget-me-nots, orange crown imperials or early tulips. It also looks pretty in large containers on the terrace, ideally in a sheltered spot.

As a cut flower, 'Texas' brings fullness to spring bouquets. Voles and deer usually leave daffodils alone. Heritage varieties have proven themselves over generations because they are robust and keep coming back. With a little patience, 'Texas' also forms handsome clumps over the years.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, tip upwards, 10–15 cm deep and 10–15 cm apart. A sunny to partly shaded, ideally sheltered spot with well-drained soil is best. This keeps the heavy double flowers upright even after rain. Avoid waterlogging.

Care

Snip off faded flowers so the plant does not put energy into seed. Leave the foliage until it yellows, as it prepares next year's flowers. You can divide dense clumps after a few years. Daffodils are poisonous and their sap harms other cut flowers, so stand freshly cut stems in water on their own for a few hours first.
