If there is one double tulip no garden should be without, it is 'Angélique'. Its flowers open creamy with a green tinge and then turn soft pink with white. Delicately scented and long-flowering, it has been one of the most popular romantic tulips for years.

About this variety

If you follow 'Angélique' as it opens, you see a small transformation. The buds first appear cream with a green tinge. Then the many petals take on a soft pink, interwoven with white. The result is a full, round flower reminiscent of a peony or an old rose.

At 45–55 cm it belongs in the middle of the border. It flowers when many earlier tulips are over and accompanies forget-me-nots, bleeding heart and the first hardy geraniums. With 25 bulbs you can plant a generous group or put some in large containers. In a pot, grape hyacinths beneath it make a lovely bulb lasagne.

In the vase it opens wide and has a delicate scent, ideal for romantic bouquets. Double flowers are barely accessible to bees. Double late tulips flower best in their first year; for the same abundance, plant more in autumn or keep the bulbs dry over the summer.

Planting

Plant the bulbs between September and December, preferably in October and November when the soil has cooled. Set them 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart, in groups of 10 or more. A sunny spot with free-draining soil is ideal; add sand to the planting hole in heavy soil. Plant closely in pots.

Care

Water sparingly in spring and only during dry spells. Cut off spent flowers and leave the foliage until it turns yellow. For rich flowering every year, lift the bulbs about a month after flowering, store them dry and replant in autumn. A planting basket keeps voles away. Protect pots from persistent wet in winter.
