  • Huge double flowers in primrose yellow
  • Fine red edge on the petals
  • Green streaks on the outer petals
  • Flowers in April and May, height 45–55 cm
  • 15 bulbs for beds, pots and vases

'Akebono' comes from Japan and forms particularly large, double flowers in primrose yellow. A fine red edge and green streaks on the outer petals give it refined markings. Robust and sturdy, it is reminiscent of a camellia or peony.

About this variety

The flowers of 'Akebono' are large and lavishly double, with slightly wavy petals. The base colour is a pale primrose yellow. A hairline red edge runs along the margins, and feathery green streaks appear on the outer petals. The name means roughly 'dawn' in Japanese.

At 45–55 cm it belongs in the middle of the border. Against blue grape hyacinths, forget-me-nots or purple tulips the yellow makes a fresh contrast. The fine markings also show up well next to dark foliage such as heuchera. In large containers on the terrace you can admire the flowers up close, ideally above a layer of crocuses in a bulb lasagne.

In the vase the large flowers look like small peonies and last well. Double flowers are barely accessible to bees. 'Akebono' is considered robust; even so, it flowers most abundantly in its first year, and replanting in autumn keeps the display consistent.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to December, ideally in October and November. Set them 10–15 cm deep, tip upwards, 10–12 cm apart, in groups of 10 or more. A sunny spot with free-draining soil is ideal; lighten heavy soil with sand. Plant more closely in pots.

Care

Water only during dry spells in spring, as this variety needs little water. Cut off spent flowers and leave the foliage until it turns yellow. The bulbs can stay in the ground; for equally lavish flowering, replant or lift them and store them dry. A planting basket keeps voles away. Protect pots from persistent wet in winter.
