  • Flowers in May and June
  • About 50–70 cm tall, slender habit
  • Pollinator-friendly and a good cut flower

'Bronze Perfection' is a Dutch iris in warm colours with an almost metallic sheen. Golden-yellow falls meet bronze standards with a hint of violet. The flowers measure about 11 cm and appear in May and June, ideal for borders and vases.

About this variety

Dutch irises are usually known in blue. 'Bronze Perfection' shows that there is another way. Its falls are golden yellow, darker towards the base, and carry a bright blotch. Above them stand bronze standards with a violet sheen. Together they give a warm, almost metallic impression that looks especially lovely in evening light.

At about 50 to 70 cm tall and with a slender habit, this variety needs little space. Plant it in groups among later-flowering perennials, so that it fills gaps in May and June. Blue irises, purple alliums or bronze fennel go well with it. It thrives in sun and partial shade. It grows only moderately well in pots.

In the vase, 'Bronze Perfection' is a real eye-catcher. Combined with blue Dutch irises or ranunculus, it makes bouquets with plenty of contrast. Cut the stems when the bud is just showing colour. Bees like to visit the flowers in the garden, so it is worth leaving some standing.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to November, about 8–10 cm deep and 8–10 cm apart. Set them in groups, tip upwards. A sunny to partly shaded spot with free-draining loamy or sandy soil is ideal. In heavy soils, a handful of sand in the planting hole helps prevent waterlogging.

Care

Water during dry spells while the plants are sprouting and flowering; after that the bulbs prefer to be rather dry. A light feed in spring is sufficient. Cut off faded flowers and leave the foliage until it yellows. The bulbs are hardy in Switzerland and can stay in the ground.
