Hyacinthoides non-scripta is the true English bluebell that turns whole woodlands blue in Britain. Its scented, deep violet-blue bells hang on one side of gracefully arching stems. If you would like a small bluebell wood in your own garden, this is where to start.

About this variety

Unlike the Spanish bluebell, the English species carries its bells on only one side of the stem, which therefore bends gracefully downwards. The narrow bells are deep violet blue, with slightly rolled-back tips. The scent is distinct and sweet, especially on warm spring days in a larger colony.

At about 20–30 cm tall, it belongs in the light shade beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. There it forms dense blue carpets over time. Wood anemones, sweet woodruff, ferns and hostas go well with it. It is also happy at the woodland edge or in a naturalistic meadow with some shade. For a small woodland scene, plant the bulbs loosely scattered.

Bees, bumblebees and early butterflies love to visit the bells. In the vase a few stems give off a pleasant scent. The English bluebell multiplies steadily through offsets and seed and needs little care. No part of the plant is edible. In Britain such colonies have grown for centuries.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November, as soon as possible after they arrive. Set them tip upwards, 8–10 cm deep and 8–10 cm apart. A partially shaded spot with moist, humus-rich and free-draining soil is ideal.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. A layer of leaves in autumn imitates the woodland floor. In a meadow or lawn, only mow once the foliage has died back. After a few years you can divide dense clumps in summer.
