  • Almond-green bells with a purple-brown flush
  • Dense flower spike, about 90–110 cm tall
  • Blue-green to silvery foliage
  • Flowers in April and May, light scent
  • For warm, very free-draining spots

'Green Dreams' is a special form of Fritillaria persica. Instead of the usual dark colour, it bears almond-green bells flushed with purple-brown. Above blue-green foliage it looks refined and quiet, but with plenty of presence.

About this variety

Fritillaria persica forms tall spikes with dozens of small, hanging bells. 'Green Dreams' stands out for its unusual colour: a soft almond green, flushed purple-brown towards the edges. The blue-green, slightly silvery leaves spiral around the stem and strengthen the cool, elegant impression.

At about 90–110 cm tall, it adds a vertical accent to the border. It fits well into gravel and rock gardens or among silvery perennials such as lavender and lamb's ears. Combine it with dark tulips or the dark violet form of Fritillaria persica for an exciting play of light and dark. It looks strongest in groups of three to five plants.

In a vase the spike lasts a long time and causes a stir in large bouquets. A light scent accompanies the flowers. Voles and deer usually avoid fritillaries. Fritillaria persica needs warmth and good drainage; at higher altitudes or in exposed areas a sheltered spot is important.

Planting

Plant the bulbs from September to November in a warm, sunny spot. Set them tip upwards 10–20 cm deep on a layer of sand, 15–30 cm apart. The soil must be very free-draining; improve heavy, wet soil with gravel and sand.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it yellows. Keep the spot fairly dry in summer. In cold or wet areas, a covering of brushwood gives protection in winter. In a pot, overwinter the plant dry and protected from frost.
