  • Purple bells with a golden-yellow rim
  • Bluish bloom like a grape
  • About 25–35 cm tall
  • Flowers in April and May
  • Naturalises and multiplies well

Fritillaria uva-vulpis carries small, nodding bells in dark purple with golden-yellow tips. On the outside they have a bluish bloom like grapes. With 100 bulbs you can plant large groups that spread further year after year.

About this variety

The flowers are small, rounded bells with a bluish haze, like ripe grapes. Beneath it they are dark purple-brown, with bright golden-yellow tips. When the petals curve slightly outwards, the yellow inside flashes into view. The narrow foliage is grey-green.

At about 25–35 cm, it belongs at the front of a border, in rock gardens, along paths or in pots, where the delicate colouring can be seen up close. As the effect is subtle, it is best planted in large groups. Yellow wild daffodils, blue grape hyacinths and white tulips are lovely partners. It spreads well in natural meadows.

Bees and bumblebees like to visit the bells. Voles and deer usually avoid fritillaries, so this species also suits difficult gardens. The stems are charming in small spring posies. In the right spot it returns every year, in growing numbers.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to November. Set them tip upwards 8–10 cm deep and 8–10 cm apart in loose groups. Choose a sunny spot with free-draining, moist soil.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow; in a meadow, mow only after that. In summer the bulb tolerates a rest in dry soil. Dense groups can be divided in late summer after a few years.
