  • Sky-blue bells with a white ring
  • Dense, compact spikes
  • Delicate scent
  • Flowers in April and May, 15–25 cm tall
  • Good for forcing indoors

'Cool Blues' bears small, dense spikes in sky blue, each bell framed by a white ring. The flowers are delicately scented and appear in April and May. A fine, cool colour for border edges, pots and small vases.

About this variety

A clear sky blue and a fine white ring at the mouth of each flower give 'Cool Blues' its fresh look. The bells sit densely on the spike and form small, compact flower heads. Above the narrow foliage they look light and bright.

At 15–25 cm tall, 'Cool Blues' suits border edges, the ground beneath trees and pots. White and yellow daffodils, pink tulips and forget-me-nots are lovely partners. In larger groups in the lawn it creates a light blue veil. In bowls it can also be forced indoors and will then flower in winter. The colour is cool and clear and calms colourful spring beds.

The flowers are delicately scented and attract bees in spring. The stems are well suited to small posies. 'Cool Blues' is robust, hardy and multiplies over the years. Voles and deer generally leave grape hyacinths alone. With 100 bulbs you can plant generously and fill a few pots as well.

Planting

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to November, 5–8 cm deep. A spacing of 5–8 cm is enough to create a closed carpet in the very first year. Make sure the tip points upwards. The soil should be loose and free-draining.

Care

Leave the foliage after flowering until it has yellowed, as this is how the bulbs build up strength for the next year. In a lawn, mow only after that. Otherwise grape hyacinths need hardly any care. If the clumps become too dense, divide them in summer after a few years.
